Testing Anhay for a Creative Portfolio Website

I was working on a redesign for a creative portfolio site, and I needed a font that would stand out without sacrificing readability. Enter Anhay, a whimsical and genuine display font from Script Amp. The moment I saw it, I knew it had the right balance of playfulness and professionalism—exactly what the client needed to showcase their work in a unique yet approachable way.

First Impressions and Visual Appeal

Anhay has a hand-drawn quality that feels both modern and personal. Its curves and slight irregularities give it a sense of authenticity, which is perfect for creative professionals who want to express their personality through typography. It’s not too ornate, so it doesn’t overwhelm the design, but it’s definitely eye-catching enough to draw attention to key elements like headlines and call-to-action buttons.

The font has a light, airy feel that works well with both minimalist and more colorful layouts. I tested it over a hero image of a landscape photo and found that it blended beautifully, especially when using a semi-transparent background overlay. It felt natural and didn’t clash with the imagery.

Using Anhay in Key Design Elements

For the homepage hero section, I used Anhay as the main headline. It looked great above a full-width image of the client's latest project. The font’s uniqueness helped create visual interest while still being easy to read at a large size. I paired it with a clean sans serif font for the subheadings and body text, which created a nice contrast and improved the overall hierarchy.

In the navigation bar, I opted for a simpler sans serif typeface to keep things functional and fast-loading. However, I used Anhay sparingly in decorative elements like section titles and featured project headings. This approach gave the site a cohesive look while allowing the font to shine where it mattered most.

Anhay also worked well for the CTA buttons. When used in short phrases like “View My Work” or “Contact Me,” the font’s character added a touch of warmth and personality that made the buttons feel more inviting.

Readability and Responsive Considerations

One of my main concerns when choosing a display font was readability across different screen sizes. I tested Anhay on mobile devices and found that it remained legible even at smaller sizes. The letterforms are clear and don’t get too cramped, which is important for maintaining a polished brand experience on all devices.

I also experimented with how Anhay performed on dark and light backgrounds. On light backgrounds, it had a soft, elegant appearance, while on darker tones, it maintained good contrast and visibility. For sections with image overlays, I used a subtle white or light gray background to ensure the text stood out clearly.

When it came to small buttons or inline text, I avoided using Anhay there. Display fonts are best suited for larger, impactful text rather than long paragraphs or dense blocks of content. Keeping this in mind helped me use Anhay effectively without compromising usability.

Font Pairing and Brand Consistency

Pairing Anhay with a complementary sans serif font was crucial for maintaining a professional look. I chose a modern, clean sans serif for body copy, which allowed the playful nature of Anhay to be a highlight rather than a distraction. This combination worked well for blog headers, portfolio section titles, and promotional banners.

For a more editorial feel, I considered using a serif font alongside Anhay, but the sans serif option felt more aligned with the client’s digital-first brand identity. It’s always important to consider the tone and purpose of the content when selecting fonts, and Anhay fit perfectly within this context.
